Dobson Celebrates Poetry Month

In celebration of Poetry Month, our students have been sharing their poetry on the morning announcements and in their classrooms.  Teachers have also been getting in on the fun, sharing their favorite poems on the announcements too!

Below is a fantastic poem, written by one of our students in room 202.  We couldn't let April end without sharing his wonderful and heartfelt work!

I Am From...
By: Daiqan R.

I am creative and quiet.
I wonder if I will be a cop.
I hear birds laughing at me.
I see a zombie chasing me.
I want my own bed.
I am creative and quiet.

I pretend to fly high in the sky.
I feel happy about getting a house.
I touch a hurting heart.
I worry about my grandmom passing.
I cry when my family hurts.
I am creative and quiet.

I understand that life can be good.
I say God is good.
I dream about toys in a big house.
I try to come to school.
I am creative and quiet.

Dobson Pride: SDP Tech Fair 2nd Place Winners

Congratulations to seventh graders, Emma S. and Emma B. who came in 2nd place at the Tech Fair yesterday!  Your hard work has really paid off.  The Graphic Design category was very competitive this year.  Despite the fact that we were edged out for the win by Penn Alexander, we are proud to say that we have made major strides since last year's honorable mention! Can't wait to see what they come up with for next year!

SDP Tech Fair 2nd Place Winners:

 Graphic Design

Check out their 2nd Place winning project below!

Our Guidelines:

Graphic Design

Graphic Design is the process and art of combining text and graphics to communicate an effective message through the design of logos, graphics, brochures, newsletters, posters, signs, and any other type of visual communication. Put your imagination and design skills to the test to establish your own restaurant complete with its own brand!

The Challenge:

Your challenge is to create a fictitious restaurant and develop its unique identity through graphic design. Projects submitted in the Graphic Design category require the following:
  1. Restaurant Logo: The logo will be the main identifying factor for your restaurant and will affect how the rest of your marketing materials will look and feel. It should be something that represents your restaurant concept and can be adapted to multiple types of media. To clearly distinguish your logo, it should be displayed separately on a stand-alone print copy.
  2. Restaurant Menu: A restaurant menu design is a reflection of the restaurant itself. Restaurant menu descriptions, layouts and colors, and font choice whether formal, casual or playful, should match your restaurant concept, location or theme. Menu items should be realistic and templates should not be used.
  3. Other Marketing Materials: Your project must also include at least one other branded item that would be used in your restaurant such as business cards, letterhead, coupons, promotional displays, signs, aprons, etc.

Describe the project’s objectives, vision and/or overall purpose.  Why did you choose your topic? What kind of effect do you want to have on your audience?

Our restaurant, Dressin’ Up, is aimed to not only be a salad bar, but to include greens and veggies and so forth. We choose this topic for a few reasons. Our first reason was because it is kind of rare to hear of a restaurant that features fashion related food items, let alone a salad bar. It is our hope that this trendy theme would draw the attention of younger kids and teenagers as well as to encourage healthy eating.  We, ourselves, have never said “Mommy I want to go to the salad bar down the street!” But now, with our restaurant, we hope to change this type of thinking and continue to encourage our generation and the next not all take-out or fast-food type of meals need to be un-healthy in order to be good.

Salad is healthy, pizza is not. Salad is nutritious, cheese steaks are not. See? We aim to bring a new spark of life to the human eye. For our audience, we want to encourage them to eat healthy but also have fun doing it.

Why did we choose this topic? Because one day, we learned in health that more and more each day, more citizens are becoming obese. Each day people are eating pizza, doughnuts, potato chips, etc. but with this unique idea of a salad bar and beyond, how can people still get unhealthily fat? We see our restaurant as a new era of eating happy and healthy.

COMING THIS WEEK: April 7, 2014

COMING THIS WEEK: April 7, 2014

S.W.E.B.S. FOCUS:

Rule #1- I will follow school procedures at all times.

Friday, April 11th

  • Fun Friday: 30 Tickets to attend, 10 additional tickets to dress down.

  1. What is National Poetry Month? National Poetry Month is a month-long, national celebration of poetry established by the Academy of American Poets. The concept is to widen the attention of individuals and the media—to the art of poetry, to living poets, to our complex poetic heritage, and to poetry books and journals of wide aesthetic range and concern. We hope to increase the visibility and availability of poetry in popular culture while acknowledging and celebrating poetry’s ability to sustain itself in the many places where it is practiced and appreciated.
  2. Who started it? The Academy of American Poets has led this initiative from its inception in 1996 and along the way has enlisted a variety of government agencies and officials, educational leaders, publishers, sponsors, poets, and arts organizations to help.
  3. When is National Poetry Month? April. Every year since 1996.
  4. Why was April chosen for National Poetry Month? In coordination with poets, booksellers, librarians, and teachers, the Academy chose a month when poetry could be celebrated with the highest level of participation. Inspired by the successful celebrations of Black History Month (February) and Women's History Month (March), and on the advice of teachers and librarians, April seemed the best time within the year to turn attention toward the art of poetry—in an ultimate effort to encourage poetry readership year-round.
  5. What are the goals of National Poetry Month? The goals of National Poetry Month are to:
    • Highlight the extraordinary legacy and ongoing achievement of American poets
    • Introduce more Americans to the pleasures of reading poetry
    • Bring poets and poetry to the public in immediate and innovative ways
    • Make poetry a more important part of the school curriculum
    • Increase the attention paid to poetry by national and local media
    • Encourage increased publication, distribution, and sales of poetry books
    • Increase public and private philanthropic support for poets and poetry

       PSSA PREP TIP:

    After Reading Strategies

    ·       First of all... DON’T TRUST YOUR MEMORY. GO BACK TO THE TEX.
o   It’s not cheating; you have the time, and why else did you highlight?
    ·        Pretend It’s Not Multiple Choice
o   Cover the answers and read the question to see if you can answer it on your own.
o   Now, read ALL of the answer choices.
o   See if any of the choices match your prediction.
o   If your prediction isn’t one of the choices, reread the question; you may have misread.
o   Double check your answer by going back to the text for evidence.
    ·       Where’s the Answer?
o   Sometimes it’s just a matter of knowing where to look.
o   In the text: Some questions are “right there” on the page.
o   To find these literal questions, simply go back to the text. If you’ve highlighted text that matches the questions, the answer might be staring right at you.
o   Go to the section that relates to that question to make a supportable inference.
o   Main ideas of a passage are usually found in the first paragraph of informational texts.
o   Look there and in the title for stated or implied main ideas. To find the theme, reread the end of the passage, and ask yourself, “What lesson was taught?”
    ·       Eliminate Distracters Increase Your Odds
o   If more than one choice seems true, then one of them doesn’t answer that specific question. Reread the stem to see which to eliminate.
o   If two answers are opposites, one is often the correct answer. Fact Check.  Read each answer, and check it in the passage. Cross out those that are obviously wrong – if any.
o   Some answers are partially true. If any part of the answer is false, eliminate it.
o   For vocabulary, substitute each answer choice for the word in the passage to narrow your options.
o   Rephrase the question: “In other words, what I’m looking for is...” Go back to the section that relates to the question.
    ·       I’ve Tried All That And Still Don’t Have A Clue
o   If you cannot figure out the answer by using the text and strategies within a few minutes, go with your first impression. Don’t leave it blank.
o   You run the risk of incorrectly numbering the rest of the test.
o   Circle the questions you’re unsure of, even though you’ve answered them. Go back when you’re done with the section and take a fresh look.  Sometimes, later questions help to answer earlier ones.
o   Research shows that first instincts are often correct, but we tend to second guess ourselves.
