Dobson Day!

After our end of the year assembly, once again, the Home and School sponsored a fantastic Dobson Day for our Students.  Students participated in variety of games and crafts throughout the day.  This was a beautiful day for all of our students and our teachers, and a fantastic way to end the school year!

The Stars Are Out at Dobson

This week, the Stars at Dobson were out in full force.  Students were recognized for their achievements at several events throughout the week.  Monday, June 11th, Ms. Moultrie put together a fantastic program where students were able to show their growth, from singing and reciting poetry, to performing to the Hippy Hippy Shake!  Many were recognized for their citizenship, attendance, humanitarianism, and much much more.

We then hosted the 8th Grade Graduation/Promotion Ceremony on Wednesday, June 13th.  It is incredible how much these students have grown while at Dobson.  We were reminded of this during our Valedictory, Salutatory and Farewell speeches given by Sara, Kiara and Trevor.  Every student was recognized at some point in the ceremony.  A list of awards and photos from this beautiful ceremony is coming.  We are extremely proud of all that our 8th graders have accomplished this year.  Each, as Ms. Cruice stated in her address, has displayed incredible leadership and participation in all areas of Dobson School.  From Student Council, the Athletic Field, the Stage and even the hallways, their smiling faces will be missed.  We wish our 8th graders the best in High School.  We can't wait to hear about all of the wonderful things you will accomplish in the future.

On the last day of classes, we held our annual Student of the Year assembly, hosted by our Mistress of Ceremonies, Ms. D.  Each class had a moment in the spot light where they were recognized for their academic achievements, extra curricular achievements, and leadership and attendance.  The Home and School ended our Student of the Month program, with our announcements of the Students of the Year.  Below is a list of some of the children that were recognized throughout the day.  This list is by NO MEANS exhausted.  We are still in the process of gathering the lists.

This is a perfect example of what makes Dobson School a special place to be a teacher, but also a student.  Our students are truly invested in their school and actively participate whenever and wherever possible.

Celebration of Dobson Student Artwork

Dobson's 3rd, 6th, and 8th grade students have been collaborating over the last 3 months with artist in residence, Rosi Dispensa, to create a series of banners that will be hung for the next year along the Manayunk Towpath.  The banners are designed to beautify the canal area and attract more visitors to experience the towpath.  Each grade had a specific focus that linked what they saw at the towpath to what they were studying in their Science curriculum.  Third grade studied the indigenous plants that are found at the canal and learned all about the scientific naming process.  They created sunprints and silhouettes and pieced them together to create large quilt-like images.  Sixth grade focused on ecosystems and learned which fish were naturally found in the canal.  They were taught how to identify the species by looking at the characteristics of the fish and they each had the chance to create a traditional Japanese gyotaku fish print that was used to create their banner designs.  Eighth grade studied water samples that were taken at the canal to determine which elements and molecules comprise the water at the site.  They combined their own microscopic photographs with scientific molecular drawings to make abstract radial designs.  The students worked very hard with Ms. Rosi to create these collaborative pieces, so please come out to the Canal to celebrate their great efforts on

2012 Olympics

On Wednesday, June 6th, our students participated in our annual Olympic competition.  Students donned their respective red and blue attire, and the games began!  Each class participated in two relays, the staff had fun in a water balloon toss, Ms. Meier and Ms. Purcell entertained all with their Dance off, and the day ended with a wonderful water ice treat, courtesy of the Home and School.  The competition was tight throughout the day.  The festivities came to a nail biting conclusion as the 8th grade competed in the final event...tug-of-war!!  The blue team was victorious in the end, but all were winners!  Good sportsmanship and a ton of fun was had by all!!

Thanks to Ms. Foulk, who organized and trained our students and to Ms. D who was our MC!!
