Dobson Pride: SDP Tech Fair 2nd Place Winners

Congratulations to seventh graders, Emma S. and Emma B. who came in 2nd place at the Tech Fair yesterday!  Your hard work has really paid off.  The Graphic Design category was very competitive this year.  Despite the fact that we were edged out for the win by Penn Alexander, we are proud to say that we have made major strides since last year's honorable mention! Can't wait to see what they come up with for next year!

Our Guidelines:

Graphic Design

Graphic Design is the process and art of combining text and graphics to communicate an effective message through the design of logos, graphics, brochures, newsletters, posters, signs, and any other type of visual communication. Put your imagination and design skills to the test to establish your own restaurant complete with its own brand!

The Challenge:

Your challenge is to create a fictitious restaurant and develop its unique identity through graphic design. Projects submitted in the Graphic Design category require the following:
  1. Restaurant Logo: The logo will be the main identifying factor for your restaurant and will affect how the rest of your marketing materials will look and feel. It should be something that represents your restaurant concept and can be adapted to multiple types of media. To clearly distinguish your logo, it should be displayed separately on a stand-alone print copy.
  2. Restaurant Menu: A restaurant menu design is a reflection of the restaurant itself. Restaurant menu descriptions, layouts and colors, and font choice whether formal, casual or playful, should match your restaurant concept, location or theme. Menu items should be realistic and templates should not be used.
  3. Other Marketing Materials: Your project must also include at least one other branded item that would be used in your restaurant such as business cards, letterhead, coupons, promotional displays, signs, aprons, etc.

Describe the project’s objectives, vision and/or overall purpose.  Why did you choose your topic? What kind of effect do you want to have on your audience?

Our restaurant, Dressin’ Up, is aimed to not only be a salad bar, but to include greens and veggies and so forth. We choose this topic for a few reasons. Our first reason was because it is kind of rare to hear of a restaurant that features fashion related food items, let alone a salad bar. It is our hope that this trendy theme would draw the attention of younger kids and teenagers as well as to encourage healthy eating.  We, ourselves, have never said “Mommy I want to go to the salad bar down the street!” But now, with our restaurant, we hope to change this type of thinking and continue to encourage our generation and the next not all take-out or fast-food type of meals need to be un-healthy in order to be good.

Salad is healthy, pizza is not. Salad is nutritious, cheese steaks are not. See? We aim to bring a new spark of life to the human eye. For our audience, we want to encourage them to eat healthy but also have fun doing it.

Why did we choose this topic? Because one day, we learned in health that more and more each day, more citizens are becoming obese. Each day people are eating pizza, doughnuts, potato chips, etc. but with this unique idea of a salad bar and beyond, how can people still get unhealthily fat? We see our restaurant as a new era of eating happy and healthy.
